The soundtrack for the film was composed by Lalit Pandit with lyrics written by Kumaar. However, it failed to meet the expectations and became a box office disaster at the lifetime grossing just for Rs. 3 crore in its entire run in schedule country.Sanam is a small town in North India where women have been enslaved by powerful local men who have no interest in their welfare or education, except for their mother-daughter relationship. The women are forced to dance and sing in night clubs for their patrons, but the women are forced to suffer as their children suffer as well. This is because the daughters can't go to college as men fear they will become the same as them. Durga (Katrina Kaif), a school teacher, pretends to be illiterate and is forced to steal money from the club patrons and give it back to her mother. She also has a young son Jeevan (Sidhartha Malhotra). Durga's mother Rozina (Purab Kohli) attempts to take care of her own grandson Jeevan after she has stolen his money for his education. Durga is always harassed by her male relatives who believe "boys MUST be kept away from females". Although the film is about Sanam, it focuses not on her but Veera (Durga's mother), who has no interest in education for her daughter Durga, but wants Durga to be safe and taken care of. Veera has many problems in trying to take care of Durga. She is forced into prostitution by her husband Lala Bahadur Singh (Purab Kohli), and then threatened by Lala Bahadur Singh that he will kill Durga if she doesn't work again. Durga runs away from home when she finds out that her mother is going to a club to earn money, and she goes there with a friend, where she meets Jeevan. Durga and Jeevan fall in love with each other. They try to get married but Durga's mother Rozina does not agree because of family pressure. Durga's uncle catches them and brings them home, where he makes Durga wear old clothes and work for the family, whilst Jeevan is kept under house arrest. Finally Lala Bahadur Singh agrees to the marriage on the condition that if their son becomes like his mother, then he will kill him immediately after birth.
